about

All proceeds of this release will be donated to NAMI Iowa to support Mental Health Education, Advocacy, and Support. This is Mark C. Morris Archive release #8 in the ongoing project to issue the entire Mark C. Morris and Henry C. Cobb Jr. archive.

At precisely 12:36PM, on November 15, in 1997, Mark Morris wrote a letter to me in black ink pen on wide ruled notebook paper. He wrote: “I put my pants on backwards this morning and started thinking about the past.” Just a few months prior to this, he had sent me a package containing two copies of his new cassette release, one for me and one for Doug (see The Laces), with a letter of explanation. He wrote:

“Here is my new tape…. It was going to be a completely dark, suicidal tape but my mood kept improving and so a lot of goofy stuff got on here too.”

Years later, he explained that he really was “pushing the boundaries of sanity during that period.” Though this recording was not the end of Mark’s audio story, thankfully nor of his time on earth, Bedlam Necklace is indeed the final solo album that he recorded during this period of an “absurd, godless, and holy” approach to working out his usual topics of love, obsession, death, and impermanence.
