In celebration of the Mighty Feeble label's rebirth, and the ongoing project to issue the entire Mark C. Morris and Henry C. Cobb Jr. archive, we give you these four songs as a gift, just as Grg Ptrsn gave them to Mark as a gift and tribute in 2008. Here you have 3 covers of Mark's songs, and an original song written for Mark, inspired by creeping charlie's visit to Mark's apartment. Enter $0, or pay if you want to contribute to the artist's current projects.
For many years, we were unable to play Mark's recordings due to a lost 4-track machine. We've recovered a rare, working model of the Yamaha 4-track which most of Mark's works were recorded on, and are in the process of recovering the masters. We're excited to play back these recordings straight to digital release, and the occasional vinyl relic, to share them with you. Here are Mark's personal notes regarding his three songs covered on In The Morning Hours....
Tyrone Power - "I wanted to write a song using 'Tom Waits' instruments. I assembled cans and wooden boxes and made an attempt at percussion. My father was a big fan of Tyrone Power and Errol Flynn. 'They were swashbucklers,' he told me. In the song, I mispronounce the name as 'Tyrone Powers.'" Hear Mark's original version on the forthcoming reissue of MF8 - Corky Dreams.
I'm Taking You Home Kathleen - "For Kathy Smith, an old friend I always had a crush on. She moved to Leadville, Colorado and I saw her less and less as time wore on. Not sure if she ever heard this song, though I have a vague memory of playing it for her once. There's a little piano bit in there I learned as a child that I always felt fit in nicely." Hear Mark's original version on the forthcoming reissue of MF14 - The Hidden Significance Of Charlotte's Leg.
Seed - "Another song featuring my lifelong preoccupation with death. I liked the idea of being planted and growing into something more ethereal. I wrote a lot of songs that are meant to be more poignant after I die. Also, a testament to how often I get tired of living in my own head." Hear Mark's original version on the forthcoming reissue of Henry C. Cobb Jr. & Banjo Joe - MF20 - On The Cross Again.
