about

The cassette entitled "Creeping Charlie's Magic Band" (with apologies to Van Vliet for the title), by the original "creeping charlie" from Ottumwa, IA, was self-released in October of 1994. All but one of the songs here is from that cassette.

The boombox and boombox-to-boombox methods of recording (the latter which is present on "At Bobby's House" and "Bad Luck") are heavily influenced by early primitive home-fi Ottumwa artists like The Bill Basset Band, Beef Stew, and especially the great unknown sulkfly. As was the practice at the time, 20 to 40+ home-dubbed copies were handed out to friends and acquaintances scattered across the Midwest and beyond, would soon be advertised in Spunk zine of Des Moines, and sold from the Mighty Feeble display on the counter of Soundwaves CD store.

I played some of these songs at Mark Morris's coffee house poetry night in Oskaloosa that Fall or Winter, with old pal Jake Allee accompanying on drums, but couldn't say now which songs. I do remember riding back home to Ottumwa with Mark at the wheel, and Jake tapping on the seatback with his sticks. ~ creeping charlie

Original cassette cover drawing of tuning gears by Minako Suzuki. Early '94 photo of Minako in Cedar Falls by Mike. Recorded on various garage sale boomboxes on October 17th, 20th, and 24th, 1994, mostly in the kitchen during bouts of insomnia. "At Bobby's House", about a visit to Carthage, IL, was recorded earlier that year, and originally included on the final cassette by The Bill Basset Band.

All songs written and recorded by Michael Hoff with help from The Van Aukens (voices, popsicles, and drum improv on #1), Karl Hoff (early AM kitchen noises on #9), Becky (wok(?) percussion and voice on #11), Julie W. (telephone call on #14), except:
#4: background incidental radio song belongs to that artist
#8: traditional

Digital transfer, mastering, digital design: Mike Hoff in Evanston, Feb. 2022.
